Waterways Oscars - Winners Announced

   Another Boat to be Built

The Seagull Trust is very pleased to announce that following a very kind donation from The Barr Charitable Trust, a second dayboat is to be built.  This boat, will be based initially at Falkirk and building designs are now out to tender. We expect this boat to come into service at the beginning of the 2006 season.

The Naming of the Marion Seagull

The weekend of the 4th and 5th October 2003 was a very auspicious occasion for the Seagull Trust, it was the culmination of the Trusts’ Silver Jubilee celebrations and our new residential cruising boat was officially named the “Marion Seagull”, by Mrs. Evelyn Crombie the daughter of Mrs. Marion Salvesen after whom the boat was named.

Full details of the Marion Seagull can be found on the Falkirk Branch web site.

The photograph shows Mrs. Evelyn Crombie after the naming of the Marion Seagull on Saturday 4th October 2003.

Five of the Seagull Trusts Lowland Canal boats moored in the basin at the Falkirk Wheel during the Silver Jubilee Weekend.

They are:- in the right fore ground the Marjorie Seagull from Kirkintilloch and from left to right:- The Mackay Seagull and St. John Crusader II from Ratho and the Govan Seagull and Marion Seagull from Falkirk.

Linking to these pages will give you all the Branch information and the cruises they conduct.

Holiday Boat, Marion Seagull, is delivered to Falkirk

Our newest boat, the Marion Seagull, has been delivered from the builders and is to be operated by the Falkirk Branch and based at the Falkirk Wheel.

She was built by Mark Roberts Engineering of Middlesborough and transported from there to Grangemouth Docks with the very kind assistance of Duncan Adams Transport. She was launched with the co-operation of the Harbour Master and Stevedores of Grangemouth Docks.

The accompanying photos show the Marion Seagull on her delivery voyage from Grangemouth via the river Carron and the Forth & Clyde Canal to the Falkirk Wheel.

 Waterways Oscars: Winners Announced.

The Waterways Trust and the British Urban Regeneration Association (BURA) have announced the winners of The Waterways Renaissance Awards – dubbed the ‘Waterways Oscars’.

The Awards Ceremony – billed as the biggest night in the waterways calendar – was hosted by the television presenter John Craven OBE, with guest speaker the Rt Hon Alun Michael MP, Waterways Minister. More than 250 people from across the United Kingdom attended the prestigious Awards Ceremony at Madame Tussaud’s, London.

The Waterways Renaissance Awards – launched in July 2002 – recognise best practice in waterway regeneration throughout Great Britain and were judged by an expert panel under the chairmanship of Sir Neil Cossons OBE, Chairman of English Heritage and The Waterways Trust. The Awards scheme – divided into eight categories – received more than 180 nominations from a mix of public, private, community and voluntary organisations.

Conservation and Heritage (sponsored by St George PLC):  Anderton Boat Lift, Cheshire

John Craven OBE, Vice President, The Waterways Trust and host of the Awards Ceremony, said:  “It is no exaggeration to say that our rivers and canals are buzzing. It would be hard not to notice that our waterways are witnessing a period of unequalled regeneration. In both urban and rural areas our waterways are being reborn offering new opportunities to millions of people.

“I am delighted to be supporting The Waterways Renaissance Awards and to help encourage best practice in waterway development and regeneration. I congratulate all of the winners”.

The Awards scheme has also received royal support with HRH The Prince of Wales, Patron, The Waterways Trust writing the foreword for the Awards brochure. In his foreword The Prince of Wales states:  “The projects nominated for the Awards encompass a multitude of interests and objectives – all very different, but all delivering significant social, economic, educational and environmental benefits to the communities they serve. Many are offering important volunteer, apprenticeship and training opportunities, whilst others are helping to bring old historic assets back to life with new uses.    I congratulate all the finalists and winners of The Waterways Renaissance Awards 2002 and offer my warmest thanks to them for helping to revitalise our treasured inland waterway network.”

Rt Hon Alun Michael MP, Waterways Minister, said:  "2002 was another excellent year for waterway restoration and regeneration. The reopening of the Anderton Boat Lift and the completion of the Millennium Ribble Link were special milestones and I would like to congratulate The Waterways Trust and all the other bodies who worked so hard to bring them to completion. These projects, like the others nominated for The Waterway Renaissance Awards all have a valuable part to play in stimulating urban and rural regeneration. It is fitting that the enthusiasm and commitment of their promoters is acknowledged in this way."

Copies of the Awards brochure are available by calling BURA on 020 7539 4030.
