Holiday Cruising

The Seagull Trust have, for over 25 years, provided short day or part day cruises for disabled people on the Scottish Canals.    We are now pleased to announce that we are also able to provide holiday cruises on the Scottish Lowland Canals for a family, or group, with at least one disabled member, on a specially constructed residential canal boat.

The boat has been named “Marion Seagull” in honour of Mrs. Marion H. Salvesen, (pictured right) whose Charitable Trust agreed to provide the funding for the building of a residential canal boat specifically suited to the needs of a family with a disabled member.

On the 4th October 2003 Mrs. Evelyn Crombie, daughter of Mrs. Salvesen, officially named the “Marion Seagull”. Mrs. Crombie is seen here about to pour champagne over the bow of the Marion Seagull as Dr. Jamie Sime removes the flag covering the name.

The quaich being used in the ceremony is the one presented to the Seagull Trust by British Waterways to commemorate the opening of the Falkirk Wheel by Her Majesty The Queen on the 24th May 2002.

The official naming party: Mrs. Evelyn Crombie, Mrs. Alice Pringle and Dr. Jamie Sime.

After the naming ceremony the official party were taken for a cruise along the Forth & Clyde Canal and Mrs. Evelyn Crombie is seen here taking the helm of the Marion Seagull.

The Marion Seagull was built by Mark Roberts Engineering of Middlesborough, went into service in the beginning of July 2003 and is based at the Falkirk Wheel Basin allowing hirers to cruise up the Falkirk Wheel and along the Union Canal towards Edinburgh or along the Forth & Clyde Canal towards Falkirk in the East or Glasgow in the West.

Accommodation on board sleeps a maximum of six people, (plus a skippers bunk) with two toilets, a shower,  kitchen area with cooker, fridge, microwave and sink, a lounge/eating area and an open deck area in the bow. There is a lift in the bow to allow wheelchairs on and off the boat and another in the stern to lift a wheelchair up to the steering position. There is a mobile phone, and a television and video fitted in the lounge. The accommodation is centrally heated and there is a steady supply of hot water.

The Marion Seagull can be booked for a period of between two and six nights and it is intended that the hirer will be given training in steering and using the boat. However if the hirer requests it we can provide a skipper to look after the cruising for you.

In a departure from our usual philosophy of free canal cruising for the disabled, we are suggesting a donation that the hirers of the Marion Seagull make to help cover our operating costs, although our day cruises still remain free of charge.
